FSSC 22000 – Food Safety System Certification

The FSSC 22000:2010 scheme is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI), the benchmarking body for the harmonization of international food safety standards, along with other food safety management schemes like the BRC, IFS and SQF schemes. FSSC 22000:2010 is an international standard developed for the certification of Food Safety Management Systems for food manufacturers.

FSSC 22000 monitors food safety by determining, evaluating and managing the risks and hazards during various phases: processing, production, packaging, storage, transport, distribution, handling, sales and delivery in every part of the food chain.The scheme falls under the competence of the Foundation FSSC 22000 and works with accreditation. Certification bodies that have registered for FSSC can offer a third-party certification according to this standard. SMETA Corrective Action Plan Report (CARP)

SMETA is designed to reduce duplication of effort in ethical business audits, benefiting resellers, leading brands and their suppliers. With SMETA, a vendor can be audited and shared with many customers, rather than having an audit for each customer. SMETA documents are designed for use by experienced auditors and are in keeping with current established practice.

SMETA is an audit methodology, providing a compilation of best practice ethical audit techniques. It is designed to help auditors conduct high quality audits that encompass all aspects of responsible business practice, covering Sedex’s four pillars of Labour, Health and Safety, Environment and Business Ethics.

SMETA is designed for suppliers to share one audit with multiple customers, meeting multiple customer requirements and reducing duplication in ethical auditing. SMETA has three elements:

  1. A common Best Practice Guidance on conducting ethical trade audits
  2. A common Audit Report format

Halal

Halal is an Arabic term meaning ‘permitted, allowed or lawful’. Halal when used in relation to food and other consumer goods, means “permissible for consumption and use by Muslims. Opposite to it is Haram, which means forbidden or not allowed. Arabic is the language of Qur’an, a scripture revealed to the Holy Prophet of Islam by the almighty Allah and to be followed in its entirety by the Muslims

ISO 22000:2005

ISO 22000 is an international standard that defines the requirements of a food safety management system covering all organizations in the food chain from “farm to fork”.

The standard combines generally recognized key elements to ensure food safety along the food chain, including:

  • Control of food safety hazards through pre-requisite programmes and HACCP plans
  • Continual improvement and updating of the food safety management system
